Welcome to the Bali home of Bag-all founder Jennifer Jansch
villa puRo is a dream come true for bag-all founder and designer Jennifer jansch. Here She haS been able to go all out and design everything from the bedsheets to the furniture. Come along for a tropical house tour!
We are obsessed with this hidden gem. What's the theme of your house?
“Thank you! I wanted this house to be a fusion of surf shack/southeast asian colonial style/Indonesian traditional dwelling. We accomplished this by using mostly traditional materials such as the grass roof over the terrace and the tiles on the terrace. We also bought vintage things such as the front door and the doors to our bedrooms (they were windows from a torn-down sugar factory in Java).”
FroM where did you draw inspiration?
“Whenever I do a project, I always start with a mood board. I collect all photos which "sparks me joy:)." I collect many pictures, then weed them out so finally only the ones I truly love remains. It is a way of showing myself what I like the most. It is also a way of showing “the Universe” what I want and will start the process of finding just that…”
Do you have a favorite room?
“The open living room/kitchen/terrace, for sure. It’s a place where the whole family can gather, be creative, play games. It’s also a great space for entertaining.”
The french doors leading into the master bathroom came from a torn-down sugar factory in Java.
Did you have ANY must-haves when it came to the design Of the home?
“It was really important to me that my home can also be a workspace. I always work from home either on my computer or doing photoshoots. The design therefore needed to accommodate that.
I also wanted to design as much of the furniture as possible since this is something you can actually do in Bali. There are so many skilled carpenter’s that can create your vision.”
What is your favorite element or feature in your house?
I am obsessed with natural stone so I am really glad we could incorporate that in our house.
Another favorite thing is the garden, which my husband designed. He did a stellar job! The garden is like something out of the garden of Eden, we have passion fruit, bananas, papaya, mango, herbs, coconut trees, etc. It is paradise!
Favorite materials or colors to work with?
All the natural materials really. I love stone, wood, grass...
The most difficult thing building this villa?
“The ground moves in Bali, so there have been cracks and we have had to redo things several times. Also, there are no building standards or norms. There are Indonesian traditions and things the builder wanted to do which I did not.”
something you weren’t sure about at first but that turned out great?
“The organically shaped pool is one thing I truly love. It was a bit of a risk to create a pool in a shape we had never seen before, but it paid off.”
How long did it take to build the house?
“It took a longer time than would have been necessary as we first built the main house, then the pool, then the rooms on the roof. All in all two years. But we could live there after about one year and then endure the building still going on in the villa. PS. it’s not really recommended haha…”
For everyone building their dream home, what are your top advice?
Make sure your home is both practical and comfortable for everyone - people and animals alike!
Take your time, no need to build everything at once. Sometimes, you know more about what you want and need after a while.
Top advice for someone who is struggling to create a theme in their home
“Stay true to what YOU like it will automatically become a theme:) Your home is your castle where you get to decide. Take advantage of that!”
